Caitlin's older sister runs away on her 16th birthday. Caitlin's birthday that is. Needless to say, her birthday is pretty much ruined, and from then on it seems that all of her parents' attention is focused on Cass. But then again, hasn't it always been that way? But when Caitlin begins dating a boy with a rumored "dangerous" past, she feels like the attention is finally focused all on her. And she loves it. Perhaps a bit too much.

This is a departure from most of Sarah Dessen's books. While most of the time they do revolve around teenage relationships, they do not go into that dark place of abusive relationships. I felt that this was realistic, and I liked how there was an older couple that illustrated an abusive relationship gone further. It’s been years since I last read this, the book that made me a full-blown Dessen fan. While aspects are certainly dated (there are a lot of people described solely by their weight, which I hadn’t noticed before) this is still a powerful story about dating violence, with Dessen’s signature voice and humor.
