so, just like Little Bee, this book begs you "NOOO, DON'T TELL ITS SEEEEKRITS!!" and if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.
so part of me is tempted to write this whole long review about how this book is a magical adventure focusing on a young girl in manhattan during the blackout of 2003, when all the red pandas living in the sewers came out to play, carrying tiny flashlights and shepherding people from manhattan to their homes in the outer boroughs and all the lessons this young girl learns ...more

2025 reread: This hits differently ten years later. I still enjoyed it. I'm excited to read the other books. But it is all so unbearably sad and such a waste. I appreciated the craft and everything Lockhart accomplishes in such a slim book a bit more but I think I might like the characters a bit less.
A wealthy, respected family. Summers on a private island. Four friends, the Liars, who have the world at their fingertips. First loves. Memories. Lies. And, eventually, the truth.

Man, I read this book fast. I read it a couple weeks ago, and it almost didn't get a reviewed because I finished it before I added it to my "currently-reading" shelf. That almost never happens.
I'm writing this review knowing that I may have several students read it. In fact, I read the book with students in mind. HI, STUDENTS!
I never promote books I think students won't like. So, while I didn't love this book, I'd bet many of my students would. And while I found certain aspects of the book predi ...more

Every summer, they converge on their private Cape Cod island: the Eastons, a family of old money and good breeding. The patriarch who has all the money, his wife, their three daughters (the “aunties”) and their assorted children, they all come for a summer filled with adventures, cocktail hours, and unending privilege. The eldest children—Cadence, Johnny, and Mirren, along with Johnny’s friend Gat—are the inseparable “Liars” who form a loyal and lasting bond that endures as they grow older, as C

We Were Liars is a book that you should go into blind. Because of that and the fact that this is my first Lockhart book, I didn’t know what to expect going into this book, and there were so many times when I thought to myself, “This is good, but is this where it takes a turn for the downhill?” Guys, I now want to purchase all of Lockhart’s backlist. We Were Liars was a mindblowing, emotional read unlike anything I’ve read before.

I need to read this again. And again. I actually started to. Without even closing it, I finished it and immediately went back and read the first 20 pages again. But then I had to sleep and stuff.
Tears and cries and feels and smiles. And a brown boy with realistic race issues and non-race issues, like in real life!

I am so relieved and surprised that this wasn't ruined for me. What a treat!
