What Members Thought

I decided to read this book because I had read lots of great reviews of it. I was certainly expecting a good read, yet it surprised me even still. I didn't realize how awesome it would be or how immersed in the story I would become. I wanted to devour this novel in one sitting, but accursed school (and life) kept me from doing so. At any rate, I loved it.

Meghan Chase's birthday is tomorrow. Sweet sixteen. It rolls off the tongue promising magic, romance and opportunity. It's the age when girls become princesses and go to dances. Sixteen is when a girl is supposed to find true love while the stars shine for her and a handsome prince carries her off into the sunset. All the stories say so.
Meghan does find magic on her birthday, but it's nothing like the stories talked about.

Well, the author has an eye for fairies.
The adventure side of this story was really quite good; clever in places, imaginative, and not a note out of place in the various creatures and cultures of the Nevernever. The whole "technology is killing our souls" thing, well, it's been done before. Oh, it's terrible how humanity is losing all its collective imagination because now we have technology we never think up brilliant things THAT RELY ON TECHNOLOGY like oh, say, artificial hearts. I feel like I'm way late to Julie Kagawa. Not that I haven't wanted to read her for years, it's just that it's taken so long for it to happen. But better late than never, right?
This book surprised me, in that it wasn't quite what I expected it to be. It reminds me a lot of Alice in Wonderland, except with fairies or fey. It was just a lot more adventure that I anticipated, and I'm not quite sure what to make of that.

It was fine
As a YA, it was certainly pretty good, mostly clean, and minus a lot of internal agonizing that I find annoying. There are better YAs out there, but this one is worth your time. Interesting premise and I have to say I liked it. I’m not sure I’ll read the rest of the series, but I’m not as much of a fan of YA as I could be.

from the NPR poll of great Young Adult fiction ...
Oy. Rave reviews led me to believe this would be awesome. I should know better. This comes from the same school of YA fic as Twilight and City of Bones. Loved those? You'll love this.
End result : it was entertaining, and I'll read the sequels. Eventually. I think this is one of those YA books that's really for young adults. As a middle -aged person, it didn't really WOW me, but I'll definitely recommend it to my 10yo daughter in a year or two. ...more

Just seemed too ... insipid. Except for Grimalkin. I just kept recognizing the allusions to/borrowings from other things, and getting yanked out of the story.
