Reread, because I had forgotten too many details of character and plot. Things that struck me this time--issues of adoption, yearning for birth parents, extended families. Also Sybel as a woman responding to abuse. She has to choose between revenge or letting go of bitterness, and both sides are handled tactfully. Unfortunately not as good as I'd neither thought nor expected. It was okay, but not as captivating as I'd expected after reading all the glowing reviews it had received. But it may just have been my expectations that were all wrong - I'd expected the 'forgotten beasts' to be the main characters of the book, and they might as well not have been there, so that may have had a lot to do with it.

I only took this book out from the library because I love Patricia McKillip's work, and it was the only book by her at the library. But it is writen so well, in such a simple but discriptive way, that it became one of my favorite books. I had my 12 year old brother read it, and although it is directed more towards girls, he still loved it and noted how amazing the writing is.
