Do yourself a favor and skip the crap movie with, um, one of the Estevez brothers, I forget which one. This YA is actually pretty powerful, if rather bleak, because unlike the movie, the novel doesn't cop out by giving the audience a phony happy ending.

There were hardly any girls in any of the S.E. Hinton books, maybe a girlfriend or two, but none that really did anything of note. This lack of girls in the writing of one of my favorite authors (who was a woman!) did not reinforce feminism, women's liberation, or what came to be known as "girl power." It just reinforced the idea that I got everywhere else that boys were more interesting, more exciting, and more important than girls. Sigh.

i read this book over and over again and cried every time. It's the story of two best friends who are raised like brothers when one boy's family takes in the other. As they get older the boys (Bryon and Mark I think) start to drift apart as Mark gets in different types of trouble. Soemthing happen that changes how Bryon looks at Mark and forces him to make a hard choice. Lots of teen angst and drama but I totally loved it!
