The fourth star is sheerly for audiobook merits - definitely a good production. The story is great fun, while still feeling like solid historical fiction. Jacky starts out as an orphaned street kid in London, and we see the way the kids fight to survive, and the way others make a living by selling the bodies of dead street kids to surgeons to practice on - definitely a grim start. Life on the ship, by comparison, seems like heaven to Jacky - a place to sleep and three meals a day. Of course "the ...more

Great audio book and fun story of a young girl, Jacky, an orphan in Dickensian England who left the streets of London to work on a British ship disguised as a boy. Adventures galore and great characters! Definitely a good one for a YA boy or girl. Loved it so much, I'm on to the sequel in which she's been discovered to be a girl and put off in Boston to go to a girls' boarding school to learn to become a lady. Hilarious! ...more

Eight year old Mary Faber is orphaned during a London plague. After four years of running with an orphan gang, she signs on as a ships boy on the navy ship Dolphin.

Quite a fast paced and riveting story.

There is some rather gritty stuff in here. I was struck by the casual death that surrounded her after her parents died, while she was an orphan. There is some pretty frank discussion of her problems of going through puberty while hiding her gender on this all male ship. There is also an attempted

Great fun. (Although I read a chapter outloud to J.F. and he was a little put off by the references to "dangly parts," but well, that's life at sea, mate.)

I'm reserving the next one from the library as we speak. Unless you're reading this after 2:00 pm Jan. 3 2009. In which case I've already done it.
