holy ████████ what a ████████ fantastically fun book!
i have never read anything by these authors before. i was aware of kristoff's books, having put them on channels back when i was doing that sort of thing, and i knew about kaufman, but her books had never called out to me. no disrespect, but i see a cover like this:

Okay, so, full warning: I am absolutely not the right audience for this book. If you love YA SFF horror, this might be great for you. But I can only review based on the actual reader that I am: one who regrets reading this.
So, okay, first -- starts out like science fiction, becomes the kind of horror involving lots of gratuitous on-screen bloodshed and a high body count and eyes being gouged out and the brutal deaths of small children. (Amusingly, it does all this while carefully censoring ever ...more

Unfortunately, this book is not for me. I'm not a huge sci-fi fan in the first place, but this feels like a mishmash of every sci-fi trope ever, with the world's worst male protagonist. Seriously, if I could reach through the book and strangle him, I would. CHUM.

Oh. My. God. It's like you take all the different movies and stories that you can and mash them up together--there's no way to make it sound good. There's a spaceship attack and an evil corporation, there's a contagious zombie-disease and a rogue AI, and the battle fleet is still coming, and I can hardly BREATHE and it just worked so well.

Full disclosure: I was predisposed to like this book for not just one but TWO reasons. First of all, because I absolutely LOVE books that play with the media, and I've seldom seen books that do it as well as this one. Secondly because I'm a huge fan of epistolary novels, and this one came close enough to count.
Fortunately the plot lived up to it as well. It took me a little while to get into it properly, as you're literally thrown into the middle of the action (... much like "Sleeping Giants" ac ...more

An incredibly fun sci-fi romp that quickly becomes a much more serious can-the-heroine-save-the-world tale. I had no idea how this book was going to end. Wow. Well done!

The structure of this book fundamentally does not work for me. It was sort of fun on audio but even then some of the "document types" don't translate well. While there is a plot it's not one I found compelling enough to stick with the book until its conclusion.

An illegal mining colony is suddenly attacked by a multi-world corporation (and by "attacked" we mean "by something like the Starship Enterprise"), leading to many, many deaths. Those survivors that there are are on three semi-crippled battle airships and, well, things begin to go from worse to worst. The story is told via documents obtained during interrogations, texts, illegal hacking and more - but for whom is the dossier compiled? and why? Kady and Ezra's life and exploits play a large part
