Lloyd Alexander is an author I have always enjoyed. This is one of his lesser known series but was actually the first one of his that I read and as such will always be a favorite of mine.This series is one of the reasons I enjoy "period fantasy" so much.

It was a little bit of a Lloyd Alexander month - I read the first two in this trilogy after I noticed them languishing on the library shelves. They have a very different feel than the Prydain books, although you still know you're in the hands of a master storyteller. The first is more of an adventure story, with schemes and deceptions and surprises, and political issues simmering in the background.

This book and its two sequels are like Les Miserables for teenagers. I loved these out-of-print books so fiercely as a middle-schooler that I never returned them to my library (in my defense, they had 3 copies of each book) and paid a month's allowance in fines just so I could own them. If you can lay hands on them, you should read them. They'll break your heart in all the good ways.
