Maddy's lived her whole life in the bubble of her house. She has the "bubble girl" disease where almost everything makes her sick, so she homeschools and only has contact with her mom, her nurse Carla, and one of her teachers. That is, until a new family moves in next door. Maddy becomes curious about Olly, and Olly is curious enough about Maddy that he is willing to undergo the decontamination chamber to meet her - all done in secrecy from Maddy's mom. Maddy and Olly quickly fall for each other

I wrote these words for everyone who struggles in their youth
Who won't accept deception, instead of what is truth
- Lauryn Hill - Everything is Everything - From The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
If you remember back this past summer - 2022, my daughter Eleanor was about to go on a Civil Rights Tour. In preparation I had her do quite a bit of reading, and watching clips. She read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou, and Letter from Birmingham Jail, by MLK, and The Ballot or the Bullet, ...more

Nicola Yoon's Everything, Everything is the kind of book that feels effortless -- which is in fact one of the surest signs of a controlled, skillful piece of writing. But you don't think about any of that while you're reading it because you're so deeply immersed in the world of Yoon's protagonist, Madeline. Her world is small -- she has a rare immunodeficiency disorder, which means she can't leave her environmentally controlled house -- but as a character she's vast. Her voice leaps vibrantly of

This definitely had 5 star potential but it wasn't long enough imo. Great story with an unexpected twist (for me anyway) but I think it could have been a little "deeper" if that makes sense.

I expected to love this, because friends had raved about it, until I started reading it. And then I knew immediately that this is Not the Book For Me. I re-calibrated my expectations from "awesome" down to "teen-fluff" .... and on that basis, it's not bad.
It's very sweet, really. The joy and aching beauty of first love is perfectly captured. I couldn't put it down. My heart ached for Madeline. It felt perfect.

After reading The Sun is Also a Star and loving it, I was excited to read Yoon's other published book. While it did not blow me away as the other one did, I still liked it a lot.
The POV character, Maddy, has SCID, meaning everything makes her sick. Ever since almost dying as a baby, she has lived in a climate-controlled house with only her mom and a caretaker for company. She is content with her life until a new family next door moves in and she ends up starting a friendship with their son Olly ...more

Sweet but forgettable
I'm actually pretty sure I read this book already or maybe a part of it. It was super engaging but after you read it, it's that feeling you get after eating too much cotton candy. Also what's up with this new YA trope of dying rich kids who travel to a hotel with their SO and lose their virginities? Fault in our Stars much? Ugh. But I can see why teens would like it and I'm glad that the protagonist was a person of color and I do want to support Nicola Yoon. ...more

I intentionally spoiled this one for myself a while ago. This is a really weird book. Love interest was too much like August in THE FAULT OF OUR STARS for me. In fact the premise of two screwed up teens meeting is slightly similar, but Yoon does it better than Green. There were also a couple of details throughout the plot that were extremely unrealistic.
Despite my hesitations about this book, I think Yoon hit the nail on the head with the ending.

4.5 stars. Whew. As someone with moderate allergies to everyday products and who thus spends a lot of time at home avoiding the world, this was a hard book for me to read. As someone who has a specific, devastating, life-defining incident in my past which my brain deals with through fugue dissocitations, this was a hard book for me to read. But it was a very good book. It is a book I suspect I will read again. And then maybe again.
