this book treated me like a dog treats a ragdoll.
and i have no idea where to begin.
patrick ness has written a game-changer that i'm not even really sure how to approach.
this is a YA novel. i've lost half of you book snobs right there. but i think that is my point. YA has been breaking free of its presumed confines for years. when i was a teen, YA novels were largely disposable, empty-calorie entertainment trifles meant to keep us off the streets, off drugs, and not full of babies. they were e ...more

i am the only grumpo in the big wide internet who didn't like this booooooookkkkkkkkk! noooooooooooooooooooooo
too slow, too repetitive. i made it half way through and basically nothing had happened yet. dude, it's like days of my life. it's not like i have them numbered or anything, but there are far too many amazing books i won't ever get to read for me to hang out with seth and his ditheringness.
n.b. i don't think anyone can beat me in my love of the Chaos Walking trilogy. i love you patrick ...more

Seth thinks he's dead, because he was trying to kill himself when he walked into the ocean that winter's day. He hit his head on a rock and wakes up in his family's old house in England, an ocean away. He suspects that he's in hell, or purgatory, but things don't add up: he wakes up covered in weird electrical tape, there's a coffin in his bedroom upstairs, and the world outside is dusty and empty with strange, sudden storms. When he attempts to kill himself again, he discovers two others in the

At the beginning there is just a boy drowning. He tries to fight against the water, the current and the waves, in those last moments he really does fight. But the water is harder and, eventually, it wins.
The boy dies.
That should be the end but somehow it isn't.
There is more.
The boy wakes up half naked and exhausted--hungry and thirsty in a neighborhood that is at once familiar and other. Everything is abandoned. The boy is alone. Except is any of that really true? The boy can't be sure when even ...more

There was a lot that was great here, and a good amount that was not. The beginning was excellent with a strong setup, but the story stayed static way too long--I was about to give up 40% of the way in when things started to happen. After that it was great for a while, with some strong themes about loneliness and reality, and then the plot stayed strong while the worldbuilding got a little fast and loose. I had some unanswered questions, but I also gobbled down the last 20% of the book without wa

4 stars because the writing was gorgeous... maybe 3 for how much that I like the actual story ...not my usual thing, but I'm glad that I read it.
