When I read this, I hadn't read McCafferty's Jessica Darling series, and I can see the resemblance.
The parents were amusing, but a bit over the top (for those familiar with Gilmore Girls, they were a bit like the townies - either charming and funny or waaaaay too much). Their plan acronyms were funny, I guess. It also bothered me that their plan seemed to consist entirely of dressing Opal in slutty clothes.
