Sixteen-year-old Kaelyn knows it's time to start facing her fears and tackling her insecurities when she lets the boy who was once her best friend leave for school abroad without even saying good-bye. But as an unfamiliar virus sweeps through their small island community, suddenly she's got a lot of good reasons to be scared. In letters to her friend Leo who left for school on the mainland, Kaelyn describes a strange illness moving through her island community. It starts with a fever, then itching, then manic behavior. Even though her father works at the hospital, they don't know how to cure it, and no one is safe. As more fall ill and die and the island is quarantined, Kaelyn has to join forces with people she never would have called friends before.

Not a dystopia, but a rather realistic look at what could happen if a virulent virus strikes - just think of the hysteria surrounding MRSA, SARS, the H1N1 virus, etc.. The unrealistic part is that this is set on an island just off Canada, and thus easy to quarantine.
