Shelves: contemporary-romance, stayed-up-way-too-late

This is just a really great romance. Nothing particularly special, the dialogue doesn't blow you away or anything, but it's just really really nice. I was, suddenly, in the mood for some blue-eyed Hardy Cates (having "met" him before in Sugar Daddy) and lucky for me this book was on the library shelf. I stayed up until 2:30am reading this (and my alarm goes off at 4:30 am, so I'm in trouble today) and I nearly finished it in on sitting.

So, on the face of it, a romance is basically a fantasy tha This is just a really great romance. Nothing particularly special, the dialogue doesn't blow you away or anything, but it's just really really nice. I was, suddenly, in the mood for some blue-eyed Hardy Cates (having "met" him before in Sugar Daddy) and lucky for me this book was on the library shelf. I stayed up until 2:30am reading this (and my alarm goes off at 4:30 am, so I'm in trouble today) and I nearly finished it in on sitting.

So, on the face of it, a romance is basically a fantasy that an average woman (with problems) will prove irresistibly attractive to an awesome man. And that's what we have here. Haven Travis seems fairly average. She's reasonably attractive (with small boobs), rich (but with a guilt complex about it), educated (but apparently not with an employable degree, since we are never told what it is, and she gets a job as an building manager's office assistant, part of her duties include cleaning the coffee maker, so, not terribly skilled labor), with attachment issues (her mom withheld affection and constantly try to turn her into something she's not, and her dad, well, her dad is a hardass).

Hardy Cates was born poor - we learned a lot about his childhood in Sugar Daddy. And he's gorgeous - deep blue eyes and an easy-going way about him, and muscles he's come by honestly from years of hard work. Women trip over themselves when he walks by. His irresistibleness is somehow conveyed to the reader, but I'm not quite sure how, I just know that I "get it!"

Haven and Hardy meet accidentally at Gage & Liberty's wedding - this book takes off pretty much where Sugar Daddy leaves off, so it might be nice to read them back-to-back (which I did not). It's a completely stupid case of mistaken identity that works for some reason. She sees a man - whom she thinks is her boyfriend, Nick - walk into the family wine cellar, and she follows him him and turns the lights out and starts making out with him. It's not clear WHY she turns the lights out, but it is clear why the AUTHOR turns the lights out - otherwise we don't have this cutesy meeting. They have sizzling kisses, then she realizes he's not Nick (takes her long enough! she must have been pretty buzzed on wedding champagne), they figure out who the other one is, end scene. We are never really told WHY, but from this moment on, Hardy really really REALLY wants Haven. But Gage hates Hardy (with reason) and Haven marries Nick, and so our lovebirds do not join. Not yet, anyway.

Haven marries THE WRONG GUY. She grew up in Houston, TX (this book is set in Texas), goes away to Wellesley for college, meets this guy at a party, and he is the first person to really love her for who she is. He seems nice enough, if a bit bland. All of her family and friends advise against him, but they elope. He turns out to be an abuser of the first order - I can't tell if she was just oblivious to his controlling nature, or if he hid it from her really well before the marriage, we aren't really shown enough of them to know. So, anyway, she has issues resulting from that.

I've never been a part of an abusive relationship, so I don't know if this is written well or not, but Ms Kleypas goes into a bit of detail about it.

This was a very enjoyable, quick read. The author goes in-depth on the subject of abused wives, which is part of the main character's background and it's really quite interesting and fast-paced. She also gets into the oil recovery industry in Texas, not a subject that would probably interest most people but something new, none the less. I could not put this book down. ...more

The follow up to Sugar Daddy, this was a great book. THe subject matter (abusive husband) was somewhat difficult for me to read about but overall it was very well done. I can't wait for another contemporary romance from Lisa Kleypas. ...more

A woman moves back home after a divorce and puts her life and emotions back together. The IS a romance, but with some darker themes than others I have read. Also lots of graphic sexy time.
