A 2.5 star review.
Slightly disappointing... although I don't know why, as I seem to remember being disappointed by it when I read it as a teen as well, but guess I'd somehow built it up in my mind anyway.
But the thing that got me is that it starts out really strong, so for most of the book I had high hopes about the outcome... but then it completely fell flat. To be fair I don't quite see how else it could have ended, but the way it was done seemed more than a little rushed.

I can't believe I'd never read this book before. It was fantastic. Short but damn near perfect read.

One of my favorite Judy Blume books.
In this one a teenage girl's father is murdered and her whole life is disrupted. Heavy shit to read in junior high, let me tell you. But I really respect Judy Blume for not pretending that all teenagers have peachy keen lives of sock hops and ice cream sodas.
UPDATE: I recently reread this book after finding a copy in a free box. It held my interest as an adult just as well as it did when I was when I was in middle school. The writing, the story, the characters ...more
