A tense and well-told story of a 14 year old kid looking for someone willing to help him and his sisters escape their abusive mother. I was struck by how difficult it was for Matthew to convince a responsible adult to act, and saddened to think that this must be the case for many kids in real life.
This is a powerful book recommended for ages 14 and up.

This was....interesting. I don't object to the content, or to the understated way Nikki's behavior is revealed. It's just that the prose and the language read as spectacularly dated, and I thought maybe it wasn't supposed to be contemporary, until cell phones happened. I guess I was just underwhelmed.

A very tense read; I could not have kept going except that the narrator accounted for in the present everyone I cared about from his harrowing past. Made me want to have babies to protect.
