A tense and well-told story of a 14 year old kid looking for someone willing to help him and his sisters escape their abusive mother. I was struck by how difficult it was for Matthew to convince a responsible adult to act, and saddened to think that this must be the case for many kids in real life.
This is a powerful book recommended for ages 14 and up.

A very tense read; I could not have kept going except that the narrator accounted for in the present everyone I cared about from his harrowing past. Made me want to have babies to protect.
