By the end of the Series of Unfortunate Events I had grown rather tired of Lemony Snicket constantly talking AT me, and warning me to read no further, and defining things in hilarious ways. This book is much the same, and I know that kids who are fans of Lemony Snicket will just adore it, because it's very similar, with the exception of it being a much more normal (and therefore relatable) setting. Bosch's writing is very good, and the plot is quite clever, but after a while I just wanted him to ...more

This tale of mystery, magic and adventure has a narrator who is determined not to give away The Secret who keeps inserting himself (hilariously) into the narrative when he thinks the reader needs protecting. The story is fun, but the way it's told is fabulous. I can't wait to read more. ...more

Not as fab as the Mysterious Benedict Society (series,) but quite good if your child is looking for something similar.

This book has all the necessary ingredients for a good time: bad jokes, secret codes, synethesia, references to alchemy, and an overprotective narrator.

I was listening to this on a Playaway at the gym, but didn't make it all the way through before I had to return it. I might pick up the print version to finish. I was interested in the story but found it difficult to focus on while listening - I think I missed a lot of details that would've added to the story. ...more

Well, if the genre was good enough for Lemony Snicket, Philip Ardagh and Trenton Lee Stewart, it's good enough for Pseudonymous Bosh (whoever he/she is). And it's not a bad genre: action/adventure/mystery/humor. This one is better than the Mysterious Benedict Society (and the Perilous Journey sequel), that's for sure. Clearly this is going to be a series, and I can see students liking it enough to keep going. ...more

A fun book. A page-turner, even for an "adult."

It's cute and quirky -- the author constantly telling you details are secret, or that he's not giving the *real* details, so that the reader doesn't know information that could get him or her into trouble. There's even a place to write your own ending, and an appendix of definitions and recipes :)
