Rebecca Stead's writing is just so EFFORTLESS. Her characters are real kids (and adults) having real conversations, and she just GETS it. This is what middle school feels like. This is what trying to figure out what kind of person you are, what kind of friend you are, is like. This is a beautiful, powerful book, and I think it should be required reading the summer before students start 7th grade. ...more

Bridge has felt different since the car accident a few years ago, but she still has her best friends Emily and Tabitha. But when they start 7th grade, Emily is all about boys, and Tab is all about feminism, and Bridge is all about wearing cat ears and feeling left behind. When they each decide to join different clubs, they find themselves growing apart. Bridge becomes friends with Sherm working tech for the drama club, but she doesn't know the significance of the date in Sherm's old wallet, or a ...more

Stead uses this book to tackle big issues, like feminism and body issues and first love(? maybe - they're just friends) as well as friendships and how they grow and change. That's the good part. An enjoyable read, but many of the plotlines didn't go as far as they should've. i.e., Bridge seems to be drifting apart from her best friends, but then that resolves itself; girl who shares an underwear photo is treated more harshly than boy who does the same, but the characters only question that a little bit ... Ultimately I felt it had too many subplots and not quite enough substance. ...more

Sweet book and the middle school experiences are so real. I sort of felt the way it ends is a bit saccharine but you know? Happy endings are awesome.

When I think of Vinny I teared up thinking of a friend of mine who got meaner and meaner and how I was mean because of it too.

Anyway, good book for middle school kids.
