Creech's style is to create a winding story that comes full circle by the end, so sometimes you can anticipate where a story will go if you're familiar with her books. The Great Unexpected doesn't let us down in that respect, but by the end of the book, it's hard to believe that everything can come together so easily. I liked it, but found it difficult to follow. I had to flip back and re-read things several times before I had everything straight.
It reminded me a little bit of Kate Atkinson's books (though she writes for adults) because all of the different threads ended up related somehow by the end of the book. ...more
