I loved reading this story of a Hasidic girl who has a secret romance with a West Indian boy. The only things that bothered me were the unrealistic plot (based on two kids getting trapped in an elevator together) and the fact that we didn't really see enough of Devorah's reflection on what it meant to be dating Jaxon. I wish the author had shown more in-depth thinking about why it felt okay to her to kiss Jaxon but not to turn on/off lights on Shabbos. We're given a neatly wrapped up summary at ...more

Well, definitely one for the #weneeddiversebooks lists - but is it a great book? Not really. It's predictable, despite being set in two worlds (that of Devorah's Chabad Lubovitch sect and that of the outsiders, in this case a West Indian-American boy named Jaxon). The worlds collide in a Hurricane Sandy-like event when Devorah and Jaxon trapped in a hospital elevator and fall for each other. So far, so Romeo & Juliet.
