It's hard to call this a great book--it breaks too many rules, with lots of telling instead of showing, character soup, and parts of the plot that I almost couldn't follow (what are Ddura? And what's a Lanteran again?).
But I don't care--I gulped it down and couldn't stop reading. It's an exercise in worldbuilding, and it's really wonderful for that. It reminds me of Mercedes Lackey's Arrows of the Queen in that respect--it's basically just New Kid in the World. The format of the book is as a jo ...more

I adored reading about Cass' struggles with learning the language, and even found myself thinking in her disjointed sentences at times. I enjoyed seeing the friendships grow despite Cass being a 'Stray' and was totally fascinated by her coping mechanis ...more
