This was one weird book and hard to rate and really hard to review and I did procrastinate about writing a review. I decided on rating this book 2-1/2 stars, rounded up to 3 for its clever premise and general creativity. It was a disappointment though. I’m trying to read only 5 and 4 star books and this did not come close. I don’t regret reading it and that says something for a book I could assign 3 stars only by stretching it.

As someone who has no desire to study philosophy, but doesn't want to be completely uneducated, this was a valuable book. My friends and I passed it around in high school, and each of us came away with a basic understanding of the major schools of thought. It's told in a simple, slightly fantastical style that keeps the reader's interest despite the heavy material.

This is my second time through this book - the first being in 2006: just before my goodreads days. So, this is my first review of it.
Eleanor is not always thrilled that I push her in her reading, but she's a good sport about it. And she's 17 now... so reading a challenging book at 17 is maybe different than me foisting Plutarch on her at 11. Still, I promised her a "fun" book after Plutarch - and this was my idea of fun. A textbook on the history of philosophy masquerading as a novel. I sold it ...more

I would love to read this again. I don't remember it very well, but I remember liking it and learning from it.

I felt that the book was a bit sketchy on the philosophers of whom I knew and of whom I did not. In the latter part of the book (philosophers of whom I knew not), it became very confusing to distinguish between all the different names and thoughts. However it was an excellent book despite all the previous comments; it made me think.
