It was okay.
The combination of this being really slow while centering a plot to find out about the deadbeat/absent parent is not working for me. I also find the logistics of making the love interest a teacher who has been a teacher since the main character was ten requires too much willing suspension of disbelief. And now I want to reread The Orphan Queen instead which hits a lot of the same notes with a better realized world and magic system. Oops.
