Loved every second, and didn't want it to end, so I had to find a book store and buy the next two! Its a Harry Potter reading level and similar type fantasy story, but sometimes thats what you need on a long flight to NYC for the holidays!
I think as a child we all daydreamed about alternate worlds, so I love how thats the basis for the book. Thinking about all the permutations of how things could turn out differently is kinda fun :) I think if I had a Daemon I would hope she'd settle on being a ...more

I wish I hadn't seen the movie before I read this book.
Still, the book was far better than the movie. In fact, the book actually made sense.
One note of criticism though, I didn't care for Pullman's religious reaching, it seemed to grand for the novel and somewhat heavy-handed. As pure fantasy, it was a lot of fun. However, I don't think that the story of Lyra Silvertongue is as compelling as Harry Potter. But of course I'm hooked--I've got to finish all three! ...more

I recall picking this book up in the library soon after it came out, taking it home, looking at it, and then returning it. I loved Pullman's Sally Lockhart trilogy, but somehow this book didn't seem good. People have told me lately that I really should read it, so I did, and while I appreciate it because Pullman is an excellent writer and creator of worlds, it really didn't hold my attention plot-wise. Maybe if I weren't too lazy to read the next two books? But somehow I just don't see that happ
