I can't believe I haven't yet added this book. Ok, I really liked it, but I didn't go on to read the others; there are now 13 in total. When I read this, it was the only one. Although I enjoyed it, I'm not sure I feel motivated to read the sequels/the rest of the story. There's so many other books I might prefer to read; I haven't decided. But, I am glad I read this first book.

When I first heard about this series, I was thinking "meh" and that I would never read it. As the hype and popularity grew, I was less "meh" and more "maybe, whenever I have some time and if I don't have to pay for it or exert any effort whatsoever." And then the movie came out, and it aired for free at my college way back in the day and I enjoyed it, but it didn't make me run out and get the books. [Review from 2004.] You know, the book warns that it's dark and upsetting, but dude, it was dark and upsetting! I kept going "dude, you can't do that in a kid's book!!" And now I have to read the rest (tho' I can see the format getting stale after awhile; I was already starting to get annoyed at the vocabulary explanations).

What fun! I listened to this as a book on tape and so enjoyed it. One of the best parts was the interview at the end with "Lemony Snicket" - very funny stuff.
