I was in the mood for a comfort read, and so picked up the first Mitford book for a reread. It's been 8 years since I read this series last, and I had forgotten how amazingly feel-good it is. Visiting Mitford is like visiting a group of old friends whom you haven't seen in years, but whom you know will always welcome you with open arms. I realize that sounds sappy, but the feeling of content I had while reading the book actually surprised me with its intensity.

There's not much of a plot, but tha

At first, I found it charming, albeit a bit overly sweet. I can see the appeal in getting lost in the fictional Mitford, but after several chapters, it began to wear on me. It was less charming and escapist and became saccharine and unbelievable.

Do I wish a place like Mitford existed? Yes, I do. As a Christian, do I wish we could all be as loving and forgiving as its inhabitants? Absolutely. However, I just couldn't fall in love with the book. I may someday pick up the next in the series, when I

Better on a second read, years later. Guess my priorities have changed, having grown up ... not to mention being married to a priest.

Mock all you want. I LOVE THIS SERIES. Jan Karon is a genius! At first I thought I was going to puke, because everything--especially the language--seemed so hokey. Maybe because of the Southern vernacular, which of course resonated. Certainly the oddball characters had something to do with it, and the fact that t ...more

My mother was on me for years to read this series and I finally read the first few but not all of them. The books tell the story of Father Tim, an Episcopal priest living in a small town. The books are full of quaint and quirky characters and lots of feel good warmth. I liked the books I read but I wasn't so into them that I felt I had to read the whole series-I'd really like to say 3.5 stars. ...more

This book was longer than I expected and way more religious. However, I still found it a very calming and relaxing read. The story is basically about an Episcopalian priest in a small North Carolina village. If you need to escape to a simple time and place, this could be your ticket.

I tried it because it was about a small town preacher. I got bored and quit.
