I don’t normally review kid’s books but I can’t let this one pass without commenting. We stopped reading this because the author spends so much time commenting on the physical appearance of the female characters.
Melissa Mayer- “who is sort of chubby like me”
Stephanie Pastor- “who looks a little like a boy if you saw her from the side”
Kayla Brown- “as small as the girls in 5th grade, freckled”
Darlene Roberts- has pimples and blotches that the perfect Courtney Zisky does not. The narrator is disg ...more

The reason I gave this book three and a half is because it is too short and I really want their to be a sequel or something because I was really left hanging with the end of this book. Maybe that is what the author wanted me to feel, but I didn't like it and I would of like it to be a little more resolved.

Every teacher should read this one too, and maybe even read it aloud to the class. It's a moving story about the reaction of a class to having a new member who is covered with and recovering from horrible burns sustained in an accident.

It was okay. It's set in the first person and using my teacher lense this could be good to teach kids how to infer. All the characters make sense and I love the little mini-exploration of superpowers but the book's pacing was strange and honestly I think the points where I felt the most emotion were when I thought of similar scenarios in Wonder. I can't imagine recommending this after a kid reads Wonder. Maybe have it before?

I'd been wanting to read this for a while; it just had an interesting concept, so I grabbed the audiobook. The cover was a bit reminiscent of Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli and the story ended up being similar as well, although for a slightly younger audience.
Basically, a girl who was severely burned in a fire enters a 7th grade class, and the narrator, a quiet boy named Tom, begins to change as he sees how his classmates react to "Firegirl" and through his interactions with Jessica.

Powerful slim novel dealing with a class's reaction to a horribly burned new student.
