I keep trying to tell myself I am through with male fantasies, but then I get sucker punched by a really good one.
Mastai must either be super woke or just have amazing instincts, because he dances right up to the edge of a number of problematic elements that usually drive me insane (including much of what enraged me about The Lives of Tao) -- and then he tweaks them, or subverts them just so. I loved this story, loved the author's writing, and loved his narration. I was completely engrossed and read it all in one day. I particularly enjoyed listening to a character say the f-bomb about 300x in a row... it just kept going and going and I couldn't stop laughing and imagining the author recording those lines in a sound booth. The build up immediately before the resolution was more exciting and satisfying than the ending itself, but this did not take away from my overall appreciation for

I haven't entirely given up on this yet, but I reached 24% and still just... wasn't interested. I didn't want to read about Tom making a ton of bad decisions (on top of the ones he'd already made) to land himself in 'our' present... mostly because I didn't actually care that much for him in the first place.
However, the book came very strongly recommended by people I trust, so I may give it another try sometime in the future. ...more

Somewhat fun and containing neat ideas, but it was too long. While looping and endless repetition was integral to the story, I didn't appreciate reading the same stuff over and over again. There were a couple of nifty aha moments.
