It had taken me awhile to get invested in this novel and if I hadn't already had a relationship with other Lawrence literature, I probably would have put it down.
Thankfully I didn't and was significantly moved by all the characters that played a part in shaping the novel.

Sons and Lovers is more than a trashy romance novel, because it explores relationships as a whole and not just the, er, romantic parts. I read it primarily because a friend of mine strongly identified with the main character, and mentioned that Mariam reminded him of me. While there are some differences, I can see a few similarities, especially in their interaction.
