Ran into an artist the other day who remarked to me how much he enjoyed this book, which in re-inspired me to finish it now that I have a bit more time. Moshfegh's portrayal of the art world is sharp and caustic and serves as a nice complement to the floaty feeling she conjures up of a girl riding through this book on every sort of sleep-inducing drug she can find. It's a sweet and sour novel. Very interesting and a nice change of pace. Oddly enough it made me sleepy at times.

A difficult book to like -- deliberately so. Moshfegh's main character is entirely selfish and pretty much completely despicable; at times, it feels like the entire novel was written as an exercise to see how unpleasant Moshfegh could make her protagonist. She revels in it. (And yet: this character is still not as repellant as the (anti-)heroine of Melissa Broder's The Pisces, who (view spoiler) . So close but no cigar!)
