It was a little hard to follow the Estonian politics - not super-hard, but more context would've been helpful. I didn't really like the main character, Aliide, and the other characters were not very developed. ...more

Bleak - especially the parts concerning young Aliide in late 1940s/early 1950s. A month ago, I finished a history of about postwar Europe that provided good context for this novel. The narrative about Zara, the younger character, gets graphic regarding sexual violence / trafficking. But that is balanced by the narrative of Zara at Aliide’s House.
