For some reason, I've never been able to finish a single Garcia Marquez book up until now (and this one only because it's so short) and I think this book sums up why I can't. He gives so much information about the mundane little details about everyday life, and you're expecting all of this to add up to some spectacular revelation. Except it doesn't, at all. This novella is (loosely) based on a true story, and GGM was actually sued by the actual person on whom one character is based. This person wanted to be paid some of the proceeds because of the likeness. Here's more info: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2011/...

The book itself wasn't my favorite by Garcia Marquez, but he.can.write. There are visceral sounds and scents in this book, and if you have a weak stomach, you may want to take a pass. ...more

I know they did translate this because I have it in English somewhere too. The narrator investigates how a murder happened when the murderer had announced his intentions to an entire town beforehand. Marquez is so good with details, down to the way the victim struggles to keep his intestines clean after they have been cut out of him. Leave it to me to remember the grotesque details most vividly.
