looking for great books to read during black history month...and the other eleven months? i'm going to float some of my favorites throughout the month, and i hope they will find new readers!
fulfilling my 2020 goal to read (at least) one book each month that i bought in hardcover and put off reading long enough that it is now in paperback.
why did it take me so long to read this book when i knew the first time i saw that cover that it was coming home with me?

It's a cruel, cruel world. And the people are the worst part.
This. Is. So. Good.
I loved everything about it. I loved the badass heroine, the annoying yet steely sidekick, the possible love interest, the matter-of-fact dispatch of numerous zombies (aka "shamblers"), the dialogue, the ominous tightening plot, the gorgeous cover, the way this alternate history fits so seamlessly into our real history, the deadly accurate comments on racism, I loved everything!

Zombies aren't really my thing. Whether they are the shambling, staggering, oozing sick or the sprinting, howling horror, the mindless undead just don't do it for me. That being said, the premise of this book - that the American Civil War comes to a quick halt because the dead rise up from the battlefield to eat their comrades - was too intriguing to pass by. I started this book as an audiobook right after finishing The Sun is Also a Star, which Bahni Turpin also reads. I was not a fan of the previous book, although I liked Turpin's performance. I guess I couldn't handle listening to more of her right away. When I picked it up again this year it was such a better experience! I was never really into zombie books to begin with, but this one just won me over. I love Jane so much, but she's surrounded by so many other great characters too. Katherine, Red
