I always wished I was a gifted child - nearly as much as I wish I were a gifted adult.

Reynie (Reynard) Muldoon sees an ad for gifted children and (being a quite gifted child) applies for the position - which vaguely promises "Special Opportunities."

I won't tell you whether he gets the job or not, (view spoiler) but I will tell you it follows Reynie and three others on an adventure where everything is an unknown test, and they can't afford to fail.

I really loved this book. It made me nervous, made me impatient, made me laugh, made me exclaim.

Everything clicked so well. The vague part of my brain that tries to recognize patterns and logic whirred feebly, but for the most part, I just sat back (err actually, sat up) and let the enjoyment flow.

The prose is understated and faintly reminiscent of the tones found in Roald Dahl or Norton Juster's books.

It treats children sensibly as well.

I loved it!

One summer I looked after our friends' guinea pigs and cat while they were on vacation. I would walk over a couple of times a day, feed the animals, and then sit with the cat on my lap for a while because he wanted human company. To occupy myself, I would usually read one of the books I found at their house while I sat with the cat. Fun! Harkens back to Pippi Longstockings moreso than A Series of Unfortunate Events (for me) to which it's been compared. Maybe a little long, but even without the quirky wordplay is a perfect book for smart kids looking for something to keep themselves puzzled. I wouldn't mind seeing these kids on tv or the big screen. ...more

Really fun. Middle grade fiction at it's best! I know I would have loved this as a kid. I especially liked the mix of characters, all doing their part to solve the mystery. ...more
