This ranged from a 2.5-3, for me. It had moments of real excitement and hints of deeper levels, but the main character was sometimes frustratingly dense, and the descriptions of her emotions and actions were sometimes choppy, jumping from one extreme to another without rhyme or reason (even given that the protagonist is a somewhat sheltered teenager). Oh, I love this book! I'm kind of mad at myself for reading it so early, since now I'll have to wait even longer for the sequel! This is fantasy, but magic doesn't play a huge role, especially in the daily lives of the characters. As the story gets more involved, we get more info on the magic in this world, as the characters become more exposed to it. I wanted to like this story with an unapologetic strong and athletic girl. Unfortunately while the pieces are all there, they never come together to create a satisfying whole. Jessamy’s fascination with competing in the Fives is given as fact but never gets proper foundation--especially knowing that she can't win and reveal her identity if she wants to protect her family's tenuous status.
