I wanted to love this book, because I adored "The Secret History", but it fell flat. I kept reading and hoping, but it never engaged me. I did enjoy the main character, Harriet, a feisty little girl bent on solving the murder of her brother. She couldn't hold up a novel of that length on her own, however, and the ending...what ending? It pretty much faded to white.

Okay. Maybe I should have read the reviews before attempting this. Everyone, whether they loved or hated it, describes the book as slow and descriptive. Which is fine. Except for audio books that you need to hold your attention. I couldn't listen to this for more than 5- 10 minutes at a time. I'm not going to give up on Tartt yet, I still want to read her other book.

Beautiful writing, but ohmygod did the plot drag on and go nowhere. When I finished this (and it was really long) my boyfriend said he'd never seen me look so disgusted after reading a book. I really liked Donna Tartt's first book. This was a real disappointment. It could have been so much better but it desperately needed another trip through the editors.

I've waited a long time for Donna Tartt to write another novel after her excellent "The Secret History" and she did not disappoint. This book was engaging from the very start. I hope we don't have to wait another 10+ years to get another book from her!

I honestly can't remember if I liked this. I think I did. Maybe just for the writing style. I remember being annoyed with the ending.
