OK, first line: "Kardon stood at the back of the tavern, surveying the night's clientele, and smiled with a brutal satisfaction."
Shinn's writing is clunky and cliched, and she cannot seem to handle nuance or subtlety. After a few chapters of reading about a mismatched band of adventurers out to save "Gillengaria" from "clouds of unrest," I gave up on the book. I picked up this one because Celaena Sardothian basically promised to kick the ass of anyone who didn't read this series. I found the first book solid but a little slow, as Shinn lays the groundwork for the world and the system of magic. The characters and setting seemed a little like retreads of other fantasy mainstays at first, but seem to grow in depth as the book and series go on. I found myself moving right on to the second book after finishing this one, so that's generally a good sign!
