My mother died from cancer shortly before my twelfth birthday and this might have been the first book about a cancer patient that I read; I did read it around that time. Why do teachers make teenagers read this kind of depressing stuff? Is it so they will appreciate life? Man, I was already so depressed and isolated as a teenager, I really didn't need books like this bringing me down. Total Bummer!

This book was very sad. The image of Gunther's son with a huge tumor hanging off of his head, but cheerfully wrapping it in a turban, was just heartbreaking. Probably a bit much for a 13-year-old, I think--I'd probably get more out of the book if I read it now.
