Beautiful 25 year old Heather Cynster (what a name, huh? guess the author was out of believable names for her heroines - was anyone actually named Heather back in the 1800s?) is (gasp!) kidnapped! And our hero, rakishly handsome Viscount Breckenridge, sees it happen! (double gasp!) This is in the days before cell phones, of course, so he can't call for help, therefore he follows the kidnappers himself. Wheeeeee!!! On the first night, he breaks into her room and offers to help her escape the kidn Beautiful 25 year old Heather Cynster (what a name, huh? guess the author was out of believable names for her heroines - was anyone actually named Heather back in the 1800s?) is (gasp!) kidnapped! And our hero, rakishly handsome Viscount Breckenridge, sees it happen! (double gasp!) This is in the days before cell phones, of course, so he can't call for help, therefore he follows the kidnappers himself. Wheeeeee!!! On the first night, he breaks into her room and offers to help her escape the kidnappers, but (and, brace yourselves for the ridiculous here), she says NO! because she needs (NEEDS!!) to find out WHO her kidnapper is, since he could be a threat to her FAMILY. And (yes, really brace yourself now), he UNDERSTANDS and allows it to continue. Kidnappers abscond with the lovely Heather, and the rakishly handsome lord follows along like a good boy.

At this point, I nearly stopped reading. Actually, I DID stop reading, but I had nothing else better to read at the time, so after a few days, I came back to it.

This book is so frustrating. In one way, it's good: the plot is interesting, the characters are okay, the dialogue is fine. But the repetition! Oh the REPETITION!!! I've started skimming some sections. The author tells us on every 5th page that our hero has realized that, because of the situation, society will force them to marry, and ... he likes the idea. YES WE GET IT! Frankly, I would have gotten it even it had NOT been spelled out. And I certainly got it after the second or third time we were told - why, good lord WHY does it continue? And it's not just the hero thinking about marriage - everything is repeated!! Even the sex scene got repetitive! Where is this author's editor, to excise all this repetitive crap????

And, the fact that Breckenridge thinks Heather had not figured out that being kidnapped won't look good to society, and that being unchaperoned with Breckenridge for days on end would need to lead to a marriage ... I mean, come on, she's a young woman, 25, she's been in the ton for years now, and her whole life is ruled by finding a husband or not finding a husband. For him to think that she would not REALIZE this, that only HE is clever enough to realize this truly most obvious conclusion? Makes him look like an asshole. But that sort of fits, because more than once (yes, it's repeated!) Heather muses that she thinks he's a jerk.

Additionally, there are frequent (might I say, repetitive?) mentions to a history between Heather and Breckenridge, how they never really liked each other, how she thought of him as her nemesis, etc ... I kept expecting all that to be explained, but it never is. I guess it must have happened in an earlier book in a series. Annoying.

Oddly enough, despite my intense annoyance, I'm still enjoying the story.

This book only became more annoying as it went on. It's a CONSTANT stream of "oh I love him but I know he doesn't love me because he doesn't show it" balanced by "oh I love her but I can not bear to show her my love for fear of rejection." For reasons that are entirely unclear to me, I kept reading. Admittedly I skimmed at the end, but I did finish. Perhaps I was hoping for more info on the mystery man kidnapper.

Entirely unsatisfying, and I hope to never read anything else by the author. ...more
