What Members Thought
The story started well and I enjoyed the sections where the two boys were acting. Their characters developed and I began to feel affection for them. I also enjoyed the later section when the boys leave the army for the first time and join a vaudeville.
However, although the sections in the army provided some historical interest they were drawn out and dull punctuated by bursts of almost fetishized violence. Practically every interaction with the Native Americans led to some act of savage cruelty. ...more
