I didn't fully click with this particular Pratchett when it first came out, and I still can't count it among my favorites now. This is in spite of Polly being a wonderful and relatable character. But this novel suffers from of the structural problems that plague a few of Pratchett's books -- there's a fun opening, and often an exciting climax, but the middle just sort of meanders aimlessly, dependent on the quality of the witticism and shenanigans, and this book does not contain my favorite exam ...more

How could anyone not like Terry Pratchett? This book manages to grapple with politics, religion, subjugation of women, corruption in the armed forces, foreign policy, bad acting, and prejudices of all sorts, but lead you to believe it's just a ripping good story. Absurdity abounded, satire was devastatingly on-point, and I'm pretty sure Pratchett managed to work an entire semester's worth of college coursework on gender identity, expression and social construction into a really very entertaining novel. There were a couple of points towards the middle where I worried that I might be missing things, but I caught up again eventually. Fantastic new characters and some great appearances by ...more

This book brought up, but didn't seem to resolve, many interesting points about gender issues. I'm still not sure how I feel about that aspect, but as a "light reading" book, I very much enjoyed it. ...more

Clever, but I just couldn't quite connect. I'm still rating it highly because I know it's a good book, but either I missed the window or Pratchett just isn't for me. ...more
