This book gets a lot of praise and I was a lot disappointed.
The cover is gorgeous. And the parts where Mary is struggling through the system and fighting to prove her innocence and find a better life path were all interesting, but overall I did not like this book.
1. First person present tense, my least favorite of tenses!

Despite being somewhat spoiled for me, this was overall a satisfying read.

I think a bold argument in this book especially by the ending is that no matter what, people still deserve to live safely and be treated with dignity.
This book made me squirm in so many ways bc the unapologetic situation of the group home setting was real.
I also think I was reading too much Alex Michaelides bc this felt like the YA version of The Silent Patient.

Yikes.
It's great, don't get me wrong, but this is a grim book. I think it's reflection of my undying love for this author that I stuck with it in spite of how much it reminded me of work (I had no trouble believing in the horrors the girls in the group home endure because, well, I've heard the same-to-worse from clients). Like your average Tiffany D. Jackson this will absolutely suck you in and not release you until the last page - and then linger around in your mind for a while. I think I prefe ...more
