Shelves: dark, horror, 2007
For a while, I thought that Clive Barker was going to give up on standard horror novels. What with the popularity (and brilliance) of the Arabat series, paired with the success of his earlier dark fantasy novel for a younger audience, The Thief of Always, I thought maybe he was going to take the route of other horror authors, and focus on writing for teens. Mister B. Gone marks his return to adult horror, and I’m pleased to say that it’s pretty good.

A previous reviewer pointed out my favorite part of the book;faux aged page & flyleaf design. Unfortunately, while I usually enjoy Mr. Barker's novels, I found this to be a minor effort. Without revealing too much of the plot, there some interesting bits about Gutenberg but the premise just gets a bit gimmicky for me. I still be waiting for his next novel though. ...more

This starts like a more serious Lemony Snickett ("please don't read this book") but then develops its own voice. The demon-narrator tries to horrify us into burning the book, but I was really not scared (Darren Shan's Demonata series is far more frightening), IMVHO. Still, a good read for the person who likes their horror lite. ...more
