Odd little book -- I think I may be one of the two or three people who's read it -- about a woman who kills her granddaughter, ostensibly to save her from poverty. Although it was written in the style of a novel, it was based on a true story. As I recall, the writing style is strangely stilted, and though I don't recall the details, it was fictionalized in such a way to make the main character more sympathetic than she really was.
