I actually wanted to give this one 3 1/2 stars. I enjoyed the setting of the story and the characters more than the plot itself. Florence Crutchfield arrives at her uncle's house from the orphanage where she has lived for the past 7 years to find an aunt who doesn't want her there, a sickly, bed-ridden cousin, and the mean, vengeful ghost of her cousin Sophia, who is out to harm her sickly brother James. Florence has lived at an orphanage since the deaths of her parents, but now she learns that she has an uncle who has sent for her. Difficult to get a feel for the ages and historical setting of the characters. Typical Mary Downing Hahn, but thankfully not as scary as when I was nine.

A cross between Turn of the Screw and The Little Princess/The Secret Garden with other literary references tossed in. Florence, an orphan, is rescued from her orphanage when a long-lost great-uncle finds her and brings her to his home, Crutchfield Hall. Of course, there's her great-aunt, who doesn't like her, and her sick-in-bed cousin James, and then there's Sophie, who died a year earlier... It's not too scary, but there's a definite creep factor that younger readers will enjoy.
