I was intrigued by a review I had read. On a rainy night in 1968, Lynnie, a young white woman with a developmental disability, Homan, an African American deaf man, and a newborn baby girl arrive at the Pennsylvania home of Martha, a retired schoolteacher. When the authorities arrive at Martha's home to take the adults back to the institution from which they fled, Lynnie whispers to Martha, "Hide her." This story kept my heart in my throat for the two days it took me to read it (apologies to my family for things I forgot to do.)
Lynnie and a man named only #42 are adults institutionalized in a state school for the feeble minded in Pennsylvania in the 1960s when they fall in love and she gets pregnant. Their attempt to escape is disastrous, except that they are able to give the baby to a kindly woman before the authorities come looking for them.
I have never read a book with such fully developed ...more

I think it was the narrator that I couldn't get past for this one - just didn't do anything for me. Meh.

This was disappointing - many relevant, thought provoking issues received surface treatment in favor of plot/time advancement. A lot of irrelevant things happened. There was an unexplained large hole in the story telling about the child that did nothing to enhance the experience.
