What a mess! I'm now sorry I bought the first three books as a bundle. I mean, I will read them since I got them and hope they become better, but... Good God, this was a mess. Time travel, talking orangutans, Dalek-like beings, werewolves, mesmerism... It got to the point where not even my suspension of disbelief could take it and I started rolling my eyes and skipping pages.

a book this jam-packed with POW! BOOM! ZOWIE! ideas shouldn't be, essentially, a big snooze. Sir Richard Francis Burton (we're reminded of his 100% complete name at least once per chapter) stands in for Sherlock Holmes, sleuthing for the crown to solve one of Victorian England's weirdest mysteries. the cast is a who's-who of the era, name dropping everyone who ever wore a frock coat in London, while twisting all that history into something steampunk-strange. everything about the plot summary say

This was conceptually cool but I'm not sure I actually liked it. It was interesting in places, but man, did I get tired of Swinburne's squealing.
