Quitting halfway through. Other than the opening scene at the slave market everything has been really generic middle grade fantasy. I feel like I can predict the "revelations" that are going to happen re: the characters' heritage etc. Nothing particularly stands out about them or the writing. If you are young and haven't read a lot of fantasy, this is probably a satisfactory if mediocre read, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it for grown ups, or even kids who've read a lot of the genre already ...more

Shelves: sff, magic, middle-grade
I read this one to see if my son my like it, and I think he probably will. It’s not a book that works perfectly for adult readers, though, mostly because a big part of this is surprises and twists, and for an adult they are extremely predictable. But for a middle-grade reader, I think they’ll be perfect.

Otherwise, it’s a nice, competent fantasy with likable characters and a decent setting, and it’s obviously the author left enough in the tank for the next book. Overall, I’d recommend, but maybe
