“Once upon a time,” she said to him, to the world, to herself, “in a land long since burned to ash, there lived a young princess who loved her kingdom.... very much.”
These books are like Hershey kisses for me: I like them, I inexplicably can't stay away, but I don't really think they're good, and I wouldn't recommend them to others.
12 pages in and I'm remembering why I lost interest in this series. Ugh, all the posturing!!
It would have been a mistake to call him young—just as it would ha...more

2024 - seven years on, this has not weathered well. after reading all of TOG i begin to see that maas's writing is decent, but her characters are extremely formulaic and the ships all start to feel incredibly samey after awhile. and combined with maas being a zionist and the lack of any substantive queer rep in any of her books, she just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. i won't be reading any more of her stuff.

This book was basically four different stories happening at the same time.
First, Celaena: At the end of the last book, Celaena was sent off to a distant kingdom. She finds herself in the hands of the fae. Their leader, Maeve, Celaena's aunt, demands that Celaena learn to use her magic before giving her any information on the Wyrdkeys, so Celaena is forced under the apprenticeship of Rowan. After weeks upon weeks of agonizingly slow progress in her training, she eventually learns to shift and co ...more

Ooo. I liked this one best so far. I loved all the different stories and at this point I'm used to Maas pulling out random romances out of her butt and then discarding them. I'm also used to her random seriousness/language.. (like what's up with all this claiming and "knowing" language between humans and creatures?).
Also the "reveals" at the end for me was really rewarding. Like I knew all the parts led to something but she didn't give enough away for me to guess.

NOW we're really moving toward a goal, a conclusion, a purpose! The first few Celaena chapters were rough (but depression is ALWAYS hard for me to read). Really enjoyed the new perspectives, I can't wait to see what happens with Manon, I feel she's got more depth than even she knows. I'm glad I read the novellas because I know more about who the witches are going after next (and...OK, Ansel, not sure how she managed that victory so quickly).
