The alcoholism story line was the most compelling, but the wannabe Bridget Jones with the overuse of the word tranny part kind of made it hard to take any of it seriously.

My admiration for Marian Keyes grows. I read a few of the other reviews from chick-lit fans who trashed this book because it's apparently not frothy enough, and to them I say: Shut up. This is a great book, made greater by the fact that Keyes has been considered predominantly a chick-lit author, and this is a deft balance of chick lit and fiction that addresses serious topics (in this case, domestic violence and alcoholism). And yet I frequently laughed out loud while reading the Lola sections. ...more
