This sounds like a fascinating series with some intriguing worldbuilding, but then I heard that (view spoiler) and I'm ouuuuut. Maybe someday I'll be in a frame of mind where I want to read that in fiction, but that day is not this day.

Whoa what an ending.
The beginning was really interesting but towards the middle I started to get frustrated about the bouncing around. I wanted to hear more on certain stories.
Loved the connections (in a way it's like a post-apocalyptic, dark, fantastical "This is Us").
The last part though was such a roller coaster ride. I have to admit, I started to get impatient and I did peek at the ending. But it didn't take away from it. And.. I'm excited for book 2!!

I'm so glad I went slow with this, it really gave me a chance to absorb and sit with all the parts of the story as they developed. This is an amazing book - tough, challenging, gripping, painful, beautiful - and every part of it masterfully written. Jemisin's style is fluid and impactful, no wasted words, but descriptive both visually and emotionally. I literally cannot wait to lay hands on book 2; I'm on my way to the bookstore to pick it up now.

I really enjoyed this sci-fi/fantasy book! The premise is a world in which certain people, "orogenes", are born with the ability to control the earth, e.g. stop earthquakes (or start them). They are shunned by society, although some are specially trained in a central facility to use their powers for the government's benefit.
It took some time to get into it, but then I was hooked. It was neat learning about the fictional world and "orogeny" through 3 different storylines. One of the storylines is ...more

I enjoyed the book as a long read while recovering from a surgery so my opinion may be skewed by the drugs. The world was believable as were the characters. I really did not care for the "quotes" at the end of the chapters. The quotes caused too much of a jump from one time to another which the main part of the book was built on. I have been reading many of this type of book over the summer so perhaps I was also jaded, as the situation reminded me of other stories. So just an ok from me.
